The Office of The Special Prosecutor(OSP) has said it will assess the allegations by the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod Mr. Sammy Gyamfi when he alleged the Minority Leader Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been engaging in Extortionist activities.
In a Facebook post on August 24, 2026, the Office said, “The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has taken note of public allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.”
The statement also said the office has taken note of two petitions regarding the matter. Members of the United Party Solomon Owusu and Lawyer Appiah Danqhah together filed a petition to the OSP for the office to investigate the Extortion claims by Sammy Gyamfi.
The OSP said the offense presents itself in different colours and so will sit down to do further checks whether it forms part of its mandate before it starts investigations.
“Given the nature of the allegations, the OSP will assess the case and determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted,” the post said.
BACKGROUND
The Minority in Parliament led by Hon Afenyo-Markin asked for a probe into an International Monetary Fund(IMF) report of suspected losses of 1.7 billion equivalent to ¢22 billion relating to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme(DGPP) by the Bank of Ghana in 2025.
In a press conference, the Minority Leader called out Sammy Gyamfi to give details on the losses, because it was his outfit, the GoldBod which was responsible for the sale of gold in 2025.
He alleged, the GoldBod CEO had mismanaged the funds adding his bail fee will be scary when in the future EOCO investigates him.
The volcano erupted when Sammy Gyamfi during a press conference at the Jubilee House called Afenyo-Markin a liar saying nowhere in the report did the IMF ever attribute the losses to GoldBod.
He called Hon Afenyo-Markin an extortionist and repeated the claim during an interview with Samson Lardi on Joy News.
This time, the GoldBod CEO added a daring statement urging Hon Afenyo-Markin to sue him in court if he feels defamed.
The issues since then have very topical, with many saying allegations of extortion against a leader of parliament is grave and should not be treated lightly.
