The Minister for the Interior Hon Muntaka Mubarak has announced that by the end of 2025 Ghana had removed 2,281 migrant beggars from its streets, saying the move was to ensure national dignity and security.
He made the announcement at the Government Accountability Series on Monday August 24, 2026 where he updated the public on the efforts being taken by the government to ensure that illegal immigrants do not take over Ghana’s streets.
In his update, the minister said “774 other illegal immigrants involved in transnational crimes” had also been removed.
The Asewase Member of Parliament also added that by July this year the Ghana Immigration Service had removed some 969 migrant beggars from the streets of Kumasi and Accra and some 186 other illegal immigrants.
He said they are pursuing the removals fully aware of Ghana’s long standing committment to free movement. He said government was fully conscious of Ghana’s obligation under the ECOWAS protocol of free movement.
“We are pursuing this removal fully conscious of Ghana’s obligation under the ECOWAS Protocol on free movement of persons as well as the diplomatic relations and long-standing ties we and other countries have,” he said.
He also added that government’s mission is to do away with the unlawful activities behind such migration trends stressing that enforcement actions are lawful.
“Our objective is to reduce irregular migration and unlawful activities associated with it to the barest minimum, while ensuring that enforcement actions are lawful, undertaken by the appropriate authorities and carried out in a manner that is respectful of human dignity,” Muntaka said.
