The High Court in Accra has dismissed an application by lawyers for Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, seeking to halt his extradition to the United States.
The development was shared by media personality and lawyer Serwaa Amihere on Monday, July 6, 2026.
According to Abu Trica’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the court has brought forward the hearing of the motion to stay his client’s extradition and has fixed July 10, 2026, for both parties to appear.
“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 10 July,” he shared on Facebook on July 6, 2026.
It will be recalled that lawyers for Abu Trica filed an emergency application at the High Court seeking a stay of execution of an extradition order granted on July 2, 2026.
The application, filed on behalf of the applicant, sought to halt all processes leading to the surrender of Abu Trica to authorities in the United States, pending the filing, hearing, and determination of an intended appeal, as well as an application for leave to appeal.
According to court documents, counsel requested five key reliefs, including an order staying the execution of the High Court’s July 2 judgment, which dismissed Abu Trica’s application for a writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum.
The lawyers also sought a stay of execution and enforcement of a committal order issued by the District Court.
In addition, they asked the Court to restrain the Minister for the Interior, the Attorney-General, the Ghana Police Service acting through INTERPOL, and any other state agency from surrendering, extraditing, removing, or transferring Kumi into United States custody until his appeal processes are fully concluded.
Counsel further prayed the Court for an immediate administrative stay of the High Court’s judgment and all consequential orders pending the determination of the application, as well as any other reliefs the Court may deem appropriate.
Abu Trica is facing extradition proceedings in relation to charges linked to romance scam in the United States.
