Lawyer Kwame Akuffo, legal counsel for former Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has asserted that Kwadwo Safo Akofena was no longer the designated leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission before the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
He argued that he had been removed from the church’s “Crown Prince” position through constitutional amendments.
Addressing a press conference, Akuffo said although Akofena had initially been designated as the church’s successor when the will was written, his father later initiated constitutional changes that removed him from that position before his death.
“By the time his father was dying, Akofena was not the designated leader of the church. Constitutionally, he had been removed from the crown prince position,” Akuffo stated.
Lawyer Kwame Akuffo dismissed claims that the reading of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s will has settled the question of who should lead the Kristo Asafo Mission.
Addressing a press conference, Akuffo said widespread assertions following the reading of the founder’s will were based on misinformation and a misunderstanding of the church’s constitutional processes.
According to him, while the contents of the will have generated intense public discussion, the document does not determine the leadership of the church.
“The reading of the will in itself does not settle the leadership position because the Kristo Asafo Mission operates based on a constitutional process. That constitutional process is not anchored on a will, which is yet to be admitted to probate,” he stated.
Akuffo further stressed that there is no provision in the will that appoints or anoints any individual as the next leader of the church.
He explained that Clause 27 of the will merely refers to a “male biological child” who is an heir and is capable of accepting the leadership, arguing that the clause only identifies a pool of eligible persons rather than naming a specific successor.
“There is no part of the will which anointed any individual as the next leader of the church,” he said.
The lawyer also addressed claims surrounding Akofena’s alleged succession, arguing that the will was drafted before amendments were made to the Kristo Asafo Mission’s constitution.
He criticised individuals who, in his view, had misrepresented the facts, saying inaccurate information had led many to draw erroneous conclusions about the church’s succession.
Drawing a comparison with traditional leadership, Akuffo questioned whether a person who had been removed as a designated successor could still automatically assume leadership after the death of the leader.
“These are questions that require critical thinking and not misinformation,” he added.
The lawyer said his client had instructed him to clarify the issues in the interest of ensuring the public is accurately informed.
The succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission intensified after the will of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo was read to family members in early July 2026. Following the reading, some commentators claimed the document had named his son, Kwadwo Safo Akofena, as both heir and successor to lead the church.
