Ghana has been placed in Pot 2 ahead of the draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, setting up the possibility of another difficult route to the continental tournament.
The draw will be held on May 19, 2026, at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association in Cairo at 12:00 GMT and will officially begin the qualification process for the 36th edition of the tournament.
For the first time in the competition’s modern history, the tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with the finals scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Being in Pot 2 means Ghana could be drawn against some of Africa’s strongest sides from Pot 1, including Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria.
The Black Stars could also end up in the same qualifying group as hosts Kenya or Tanzania. Although the three host nations are already guaranteed places at the tournament, they will still take part in the qualifiers.
In those groups, only one qualification spot will be available for the remaining three teams, increasing the pressure on every fixture.
CAF will use a familiar format for the qualifiers, with 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the finals, except in groups containing one of the host nations, where only one non-host team will progress.
Ghana head into the draw looking to avoid another disappointing campaign after failing to qualify for the last edition of the tournament in Morocco. The Black Stars finished bottom of a group that included Angola, Sudan, and Niger.
CAF has also compressed the qualification schedule due to the short time between the draw and the tournament itself. All six matchdays will be played across three FIFA international windows.
Matchdays one and two will take place between September 21 and October 6, 2026, while matchdays three and four are scheduled for November 9 to 17, 2026. The final two rounds of qualifiers will be played from March 22 to 30, 2027.
