Mampong NPP Election Committee Addresses Chaos as Violence Halts Voting in 70 Polling Stations

A report submitted by the Polling Station Election Committee (PSEC) accused some individuals allegedly linked to Mr Richard Asare, popularly known as APICOM, and some alleged NDC affiliated thugs of obstructing the electoral process.

The report named Obolo, said to be a newly recruited national security operative, Manaf, also known as Atuguba, and Jalilu among persons allegedly involved in the disturbances.

According to the committee, the group moved from one polling station to another, seizing electoral materials and allegedly attacking election officials. At the T.I Ahmadiyya JHS polling station, security personnel were also reportedly attacked during the unrest.

The situation escalated further at the Daaho polling station after Dennis Kwakwa allegedly seized a megaphone from election officials and announced that voting would only continue if every individual present at the polling station was allowed to vote, regardless of whether they were registered members or not.

The announcement reportedly sparked chaos, making it impossible for voting to continue. During the confusion, some unidentified persons allegedly snatched electoral materials and fled the scene.

Out of the 145 polling station elections scheduled to be conducted, only 75 were successfully held, leaving 70 polling stations without voting. The committee further claimed that some electoral materials meant for the yet to be conducted polling stations had been seized during the disturbances.

The report stated that while Team Dennis Kwakwa insisted that every person present at the polling stations should be allowed to vote, Team APICOM maintained that voting should only take place when the official polling station membership register book was physically available at the polling stations rather than using the register generated from the party’s management system.

The regional representatives, constituency executives, and members of the polling station election committee described the positions of both factions as inconsistent with the party’s rules and guidelines governing the conduct of the elections.

Alhaj Abdul Malik Adjei, Member of the constituency executive elections committee addressing the Media has since appealed to party leadership for guidance and directives on the matter while also urging the Ghana Police Service to act professionally to restore confidence and maintain law and order.
