You Can’t Hold The Sword For The Third Time…It Is Constitutional Crisis- Wontumi Tells John Mahama

Mahama’s Statement On Akonta Mining Shows He Doesn’t Read- Lawyer Obiri Boahen

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has observed that Ghana would plunge into constitutional crisis, should former President Mahama be given the nod to hold the swearing in sword for the third time.

Mr. Antwi-Boasiako, in an interview on the Wontumi Morning Show noted that the Constitution of Ghana, doesn’t make room for a person to hold the state sword and be sworn in three times.

The NPP Chairman popularly known as Chairman Wontumi remarked that the state sword could only be held for two times which former President Mahama has already done when he was sworn in Parliament after the late former President Mills passed on and when the Supreme Court extended his mandate after the 2012 elections.

Any third attempt by the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress to hold the sword for the third time, would “generate constitutional crisis for Ghana”, Chairman Wontumi simply put.

He can’t hold the swearing in sword for the third time. The constitution says it should be held twice and he has already held it”, the NPP Chairman added.

It would be recalled that Chairman Wontumi once hinted of his preparedness to petition Parliament and the Electoral Commission, to urge the two bodies to prevent Mr. John Mahama from seeking another term in office.

He also talked about his readiness to proceed to the Supreme Court for an interpretation.

Chairman Wontumi holds a firm opinion that Mr. Mahama must be declared ineligible to contest the 2020 Presidential elections because it would be in violation of Article 66 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

He made it clear that he was going to apply to the Supreme Court for an interpretation to Article 66 of the constitution to help put the matter to rest.
