Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Willaim Atuguba

Ghana nearly collapsed because of the 2013 election petition verdict that went in favour of Mr. John Mahama, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has said.

According to the NPP Chairman, the final judgement read by Justice William Atuguba in 2013, left Judges, Lawyers and the entire nation confused compared to the final verdict which was recently read by Chief Justice Kwesi Anin Yeboah.

Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako added that the way Chief Justice Kwesi Anin Yeboah handled the 2021 judgment wiped all confusion compared to what was done in 2013.

Speaking on the Nsempa Fie show, the NPP Chairman popularly known as Chairman Wontumi stated that in 2013 after the final verdict had been delivered, it took the intervention of then candidate Akufo-Addo who was the petitioner to turn the heat down by accepting the verdict despite the confusion that had been created.

The action of Nana Akufo-Addo even drew commendation from the late Amissah-Arthur who was vice to Mr. John Mahama. Chairman Wontumi added that the late Vice President Amissah-Arthur stated in public that Nana Addo had gone the extra mile of calling Mr. Mahama to congratulate and wish him well.

This country nearly collapsed because of the 2013 verdict which was read by Justice Atuguba. Reading out the judgement didn’t take more than 20 minutes. At that time, the position of the judges showed that they were scared….The judgement left even some judges and lawyers confused. Despite all the confusion, Nana Akufo-Addo came out to accept the verdict”, Chairman Wontumi said.
