(VIDEO)World Press Freedom Index: ‘Salaries Of Journalists Contributed To Ghana’s Poor Ranking’- Oppong Nkrumah
The Minister of Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said that what has greatly contributed to Ghana’s poor ranking in the World Press Freedom ranking is the salaries received by journalists.
Ghana has dropped 30 places on the 2022 World Press Freedom index.
The 2022 index put together by the campaign group, Reporters Without Borders, saw Ghana ranking 60 after placing 30 in 2022.
This is Ghana’s lowest-ever ranking in 17 years after it ranked 66th and 67th in 2005 and 2002 respectively.
According to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, some Journalists don’t receive salaries with some not being paid at all.
Appearing on Wontumi TV Morning Show, he bemoaned due to that a section of journalists rely on ‘soli’ for survival.
He indicated that government will engage with media owners to increase and address the salaries issues of staff.
However, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah noted that a new methodology was used for the 2022 ranking.
He, therefore, urged the public to take into care when comparing the 2022 report to that of the 2021
The Information Minister said the government has accepted the new methodology and will put frantic measures in place to address the Press Freedom challenges.
