The story around the legalization of weed in Ghana is one of national interest but the laws of the land has a firm grip on anyone who is caught smoking.
Ace broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi has questioned the government on why authorities keep jailing weed smokers while other countries are cashing in on the herb.
He stressed that Ghana is dragging its butt by holding on to outmoded laws like placing a ban on marijuana.
“Why are we focusing everything on the smoking of the herb and we’ve zeroed in on that and so from when before independence, we were burning marijuana farms, marijuana farms because it is on our statutory books. If those who used to arrest people for transporting, importing, or exporting marijuana, today, are trading among themselves, today, have found medicinal value for marijuana, why are we still sitting here arresting people for possessing (marijuana).”
Kwame Sefa Kayi opined that it make no sense that marijuana is contributing millions of dollars to countries like UK and America from its trade and usage but Ghana is still jailing smokers.
“So he has one roll of marijuana; something small and we will jail him for 10 years and yet, it is a multi-billion dollar business out there. Why are we refusing to think outside the box?”
In 2019, a bill was passed by the Narcotic Commission to legalize the use of Cannabis for the medicinal purposes only.
