Carlos Queiroz’s departure as Black Stars head coach was the result of a clause in his contract rather than an unexpected decision by the Ghana Football Association.
The Portuguese coach was appointed in April on a short-term, four-month contract designed to cover Ghana’s preparations for and participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His initial deal was due to expire in August.
However, the agreement contained a performance-based extension clause that would only come into effect if the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Although Queiroz guided Ghana beyond the group stage, the Black Stars’ World Cup journey ended in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City. The result meant Ghana fell short of the contractual target required to trigger an extension.
The 73-year-old leaves after five matches in charge, including an international friendly against Wales before the tournament. His overall record stands at one win, two draws and two defeats, with Ghana scoring three goals and conceding four.
Under Queiroz, the Black Stars opened their World Cup campaign with a victory over Panama before earning a goalless draw against England. A narrow defeat to Croatia in the final group game still saw Ghana qualify for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams before their campaign came to an end against Colombia.
Following his departure, Queiroz thanked the Ghana Football Association, the players and supporters in a farewell message, describing it as an honour to serve the country.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn,” he wrote.
He added that while the team could not claim complete sporting satisfaction, they had “honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”
With Queiroz’s contract now concluded, the Ghana Football Association is expected to begin the search for a new head coach ahead of the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
