Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has called for action after Ghana led the world with a resolution to declare the centuries old transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity.
Speaking at a Memorial Service in Cape Coast held to honour victims of the transatlantic slave trade, the Vice President said a resolution alone cannot repair “centuries old of injustice” adding it cannot restore life or return lost generations.
She said it can however establish a shared point of departure adding the work has turned increasingly towards what will come next after the resolution has been passed.
According to her, the next phase of action is “education, preservation, restitution, appropriate legal pathways and sustained international engagements on reparatory justice.”
She however stated that the work will not be simple as many disciplines will have to come together to ensure the needed action is implemented.
The Vice President talked about dsciplines like “history, law, economics, culture and strong international relations.”
In ensuring that Ghana’s history of the trade is not forgotten, she said a strong commitment to preservation must be made.
Citing surviving sites like the Cape Coast Castle and other Fortes, she said relevant education is part of the responsibility that will ensure that the sites and the trade that came with them will not be forgotten but will be embedded in the Nation’s history.
