Pupil At Wabiri Methodist Primary

A seven year old class three pupil of Wabiri Methodist Primary School in the Juaben Municipality escaped death by the skin of the teeth last week Thursday when a weak pillar in his school collapsed on him.

Little Kwaku Assuming had reported for school as early as 6.00 in the morning on that fateful day to prepare for classroom activity when one of the weak pillars supporting the roof of his old school building suddenly collapsed on him.

The pillar had been in that life threatening state for a very long time as Wontumi News and Wontumionline.com later found out but the danger it constantly posed to the school children was ignored by the authorities until the incident involving Assuming occurred.

What probably saved little Assuming from an instant death is that the concrete pillar landed on his legs as it crumbled to the ground. If the full weight of the broken pieces of the falling concrete pillar had landed on his head, he may not have been a living soul by now.

He is currently nursing fatal injuries on his legs including multiple fractures and hands.

Assuming is currently on admission at the Intensive Care Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi where Doctors are monitoring his condition every minute.

Our reporter, Olivia Adwoa Sika Pa Korang who has visited the school in the restive rural community when the news broke out to gather first hand information about the incident was in the studio of Wontumi Radio narrated her encounter.

She painted a horrible picture about the current threatening state the entire structure of the school is in which calls for nothing else than an immediate intervention to save the lives of the children since in her own words, “a more serious calamity could befall the entire school children any time soon.”

“One of its weak pillars is in the same state of near-crumbling and could crash to the ground any moment. “ She lamented.

According to Sika Pa, erosion has gnawed away most parts of the foundation thus, making the structure virtually, a hanging one.

She said the headmaster was not ready to comment on the recent disaster neither was he prepared to comment on the deathtrap that the school poses except to say that he was not in a position to engage the media on the matter and referred all such enquiries to the to the District Directorate of education.

The father of Assuming who is traumatized is calling on the public to help him pay his son’s medical bill.
