US Forces Evacuate Diplomats, Embassy Personnel From Sudan

US President Joe Biden on Saturday said the United States military conducted an operation to extract US government personnel from Khartoum.

He said Washington is temporarily suspending operations at its embassy as fighting rocks Sudan.

In a statement, Biden said he is receiving regular reports from his team on their ongoing work to assist Americans in Sudan to the extent possible and is working with allies and partners on the effort.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said early on Sunday, April 23, that a US forces mission consisting of six aircraft had evacuated US diplomats and their families from the country.

The operation was carried out through coordination with the RSF, it added in a statement posted on social media platform Twitter.

Reuters quoted a source familiar with the matter as saying that the US military has successfully completed an evacuation.

The Sudanese Army said on Saturday that other nations including the United Kingdom, France and China would also be evacuating their diplomats and nationals, amid armed conflict between warring factions that has killed hundreds to date.

French media reported early on Sunday that an evacuation operation has started for France’s diplomats in Sudan.
