The Black Starlets recorded a disappointing 2-2 draw against Algeria after taking a two-goal lead in the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on May 14, 2026.
The team’s flamboyant play was evident in the early stages of the game as they continuously pressed their opponents for the opener, which eventually came.
Gavi Yao handed Ghana the lead after three minutes after capitalizing on a costly mistake by the Algerian goalkeeper.
The Black Starlets continued to press forward and doubled their advantage in the 10th minute through Eric Gyamfi, whose superb long-range chip stunned the crowd.
With a two-goal cushion inside the opening 10 minutes, Ghana appeared comfortable and in control heading into the break. However, Algeria mounted intense pressure in the second half to redeem themselves, and they succeeded.
Adam Benali reduced the deficit in the 57th minute after being played through by Mahdi Maghlout, before Zaidi equalized three minutes later to complete the comeback for the North Africans. Algeria later missed a penalty that could have worsened Ghana’s situation.
It was a disappointing result for the Black Starlets, who had hoped to secure all three points but unfortunately lost focus and momentum in the second half.
Coach Prosper Ogum’s side now have one point in Group D following the result and will prepare for their next game against Senegal.
