Twenty –Three Farmers Given Awards At Bosomtwe To Mark Farmers Day

Twenty-three farmers received various awards during this year’s Farmers Day Celebration in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

In his address monitored by Wontumionline.com, the District Chief Executive Hon. Lawyer Joseph Kwasi Asuming, said that everybody is aware of the impact farming has made on the economy on the country.

He noted that, to diversify its agriculture the District has selected the cultivation of coconut and oil palm under the Planting for Export and Rural Development Programme (PERD) to create jobs in the area.

He said that, the District has already distributed 37,000 seedlings to farmers with yet another 2000 seedlings ready to be supplied to farmers.

Hon. Lawyer Asuming appealed to the residents to reserve a portion of the land on which they put up their houses for the establishment of back yard gardening to provide them with extra income.

 

The DCE noted that, the COVID-19 pandemic is still in the system and for that matter people should strictly adhere to the preventive measures as directed by the Ministry of Health and other government agencies..

The Agriculture Director for the District, Mr. Eric Fofie, observed that to most farmers, the Farmers Day event is considered as a Christmas Day “ because it gives them all the joy they need as being part of the nation building efforts.

He emphasized that farmers in the country deserve commendation for their immense contribution to the country’s development.

He said during the outbreak of the COVID-19 era which took the world by storm the whole country would have reeled from hunger if the country’s farmers had not been alive to their responsibilities.

“We didn’t export food from anywhere. The COVID-19 has shown us that our farming system is strong.” He said
