There’s Nothing Like Former Musician — Okra Tom Dawidi

To rapper Okra Tom Dawidi, until one openly calls it quits, no one has the right to describe any artiste as a former musician just because the person is not actively doing music.

Okra Tom expressed his displeasure in no uncertain terms that people were just ignorant when they call someone an ex-musician because one doesn’t retire when it comes to music.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, February 27, Okra Tom said: “With music, even in your old age, you can still release hit songs, so there is nothing like a one-time artiste, unless the person comes out to say he has stopped music and is doing something else.”

“Music is a talent, no matter what you do, you will still get its attention. Once the creativity and the idea is there, you can sing even when you are 100 years old. That is why our brothers in Nigeria are investing a lot in music. That is what we should also do. We need to put a lot of money into our craft”, he stated.

Touching on the difference between the time he started and now, this is what Okra Tom had to say, “During my time, we didn’t have YouTube and all the other digital platforms like now. Back then, you record your songs and give them to Big Ben or Agiecoat who will sell the cassettes and split the proceeds with you.

“In those days, we were not keeping a lot of data and records but now data is fetching people money because the more you upload stuff, the more you promote yourself. People go to your channel and they get to know more about you because there is a lot of information there”, he said.
