Ghana marked its 67th anniversary on March 6, 1957, of becoming independent from British colonial rule. Ghana became the first nation in Sub-Saharan Africa to be freed from British colonial rule after 83 years of colonization. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation's first president, declared Ghana's independence from colonial rule to be a critical turning point in the history of the country's leadership. Annual celebrations begin on March 6 and include a variety of events that span the entire month, both within Ghana and among its expatriate population.
