SIM Registration: 9 Million Unregistered SIM Cards Blocked After NCA Directive

Telecommunications firms operating in Ghana have deactivated approximately 9 million unregistered SIM cards over failure of subscribers to undertake the SIM registration exercise announced by government on October 1, 2021. The move is in compliance with a directive from the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Ministry of Communications. MTN Ghana Reconnects Over 1.95m SIMs

MTN Ghana has reconnected 1,954,295 of SIM cards disconnected as a result of the National SIM re-registration. This leaves 3,804,940 disconnected SIMs. In November 2022, MTN Ghana disconnected 5,759,235 customers. The reconnection was after the impacted subscribers completed their biometric capture. The National Communications Authority (NCA) in a letter dated March 20 2023, directed all operators to disconnect all numbers that had not completed their Stage 2 registration (that is the biometric capture) by March 31, 2023. SIM Registration For Existing Subscribers Ends On May 31

The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Joe Anokye, has announced that the ongoing SIM Registration exercise end on May 31, 2023. The exercise commenced on October 1, 2021. The Director General announced this at a Press Briefing at the NCA Tower in Accra today. According to Mr. Anokye, there are approximately 11 million active but unregistered SIMs that will be deactivated from networks after May 31, 2023.
