MTN has announced ways customers who have started the processes for the acquisition of their Ghana Card can go through to be exempted from the National Communications Authority’s decision to disconnect SIM cards that are not linked to the said card. The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh has assured that mobile phone subscribers who may lose their phone numbers for not re-registering their SIM cards will not lose their mobile money (momo) accounts. He stated that such subscribers will be later given directives on processes to take to access their money. MTN Ghana Reconnects Over 1.95m SIMs

MTN Ghana has reconnected 1,954,295 of SIM cards disconnected as a result of the National SIM re-registration. This leaves 3,804,940 disconnected SIMs. In November 2022, MTN Ghana disconnected 5,759,235 customers. The reconnection was after the impacted subscribers completed their biometric capture. The National Communications Authority (NCA) in a letter dated March 20 2023, directed all operators to disconnect all numbers that had not completed their Stage 2 registration (that is the biometric capture) by March 31, 2023. Mining giant, Gold Fields Limited and oil giant Kosmos Energy Limited have joined Tullow Oil and MTN Ghana for disputing ‘back tax bills’ by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). The two have however declined to give financial details. South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, has called on mobile operator MTN Group  and the Ghana Revenue Authority to find a solution to a $773 million tax dispute. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has justified a $773 million back-tax bill it imposed on telecommunication company, MTN. MTN in an earlier statement contested the back-tax bill, describing it as inaccurate. MTN Ghana has introduced an Electronic Voucher Distribution (EVD) Denomination Change to enable pre-paid customers who purchase airtime from retailers to receive the same value purchased. The EVD Denomination change initiative will prevent retailers from overcharging customers for purchasing electronic credit transfer.
