Fisheries Ministry Imposes A 3-Year Moratorium On New Canoe Entrants

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has imposed a 3-year moratorium on new canoe entrants in the marine sector. Addressing a press conference, Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson indicated that the move is part of measures to address the issue of dwindling fish stock in the country. Fisheries Ministry To Deploy Electronic Monitoring System On Fishing Trawlers – Hawa Koomson

As part of measures to combat illegal fishing activities, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development will, this year, begin deploying Electronic Monitoring Systems (EMS) on trawlers and tuna vessels. The EMS has a video recorder, a camera and a global positioning system (GPS) for recording fishing activities at sea 24/7. The pilot phase will involve the deployment of the EMS on three trawl vessels this year and subsequently be extended to cover all trawlers and tuna vessels by 2025. Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has noted that about 60% of Ghanaians consume fish to other proteins in the country. According to her, the consumption per capita in Ghana is pegged at 26 kilogrammes per annum.
