The Minister of Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond has downplayed suggestions that the strategic products legislative instrument (L.I) will induce corruption at the Ministry. The Ministry hopes the regulation will help the cedi appreciate as well as help grow local industries. The government through the Trade Ministry is set to lay before Parliament a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) seeking to restrict the importation of some selected items into the country. The sector minister, Kobina Tahir (K.T) Hammond has said the items, numbering about 22, include rice, cement, offal (popularly called “yemuadie” in Ghana), and diapers. A one-district, one-factory (1D1F) entity, B5 Plus Ltd., has increased employment opportunities for over 10,000 youth with different educational backgrounds since the commissioning of phase one of the modernised steel plant in 2021. With an installed capacity of 250,000 tonnes and 60,000 tonnes a year for its rolling mill and prefabricated manufacturing plant respectively, the company also exports a large portion of its products to neighbouring West African countries, saving the country approximately $100 million in foreign exchange which is so critical for economic stability and growth.
