The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to halt imports of electricity meters and instead source them from local manufacturers. The move is expected to help create employment opportunities under a broader strategy that supports indigenisation of the economy. Four Arrested For Tampering With ECG Meters

Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, have been detained by the Police for tampering and installing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters. Wisdom Sewlorm, an agent, received the ECG meters for installation. However, his employee, Ernest Afatsawu, tampered with the meters and sold them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm for GH₵1200. The manager of the Chinese firm, Rulian Shan, along with his Sales Manager, Ali Yakubu, were apprehended on Friday, August 2. Ernest and Wisdom are currently under investigation after being summoned. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has dragged two persons before an Accra Circuit Court for conspiring and illegally selling the company’s meter. Charles Kotei and Frank Ofori have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and intentionally interfering with the ECG’s distribution system. The two pleaded not guilty. This follows months of intensive investigation by ECG personnel. The suspect in question, a carpenter by trade, has confessed to being part of an illicit trade that involved the sale of approximately 40 fraudulent electricity meters.
