Central Region: Chief Remanded Over Fatal Shooting At Mankessim’s Odambea Festival

The acting Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area in the Central Region, Eric Ato Appiah Mends, known as Nana Beeyin II, has been remanded by the Cape Coast District Court 1 over the alleged murder of 52-year-old Kwesi Mekyeawo. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 25, 2024, during preparations for the Nkusukum Odambea Festival in Nkusukum, Mankessim. Mekyeawo was fatally shot during a ritual procession to slaughter a cow, where tensions reportedly arose between different factions within the traditional area. Central Region Recorded 664 Fire Cases In 2023

The Central Region recorded 664 fire incidents in 2023 as against 570 in 2022, the regional office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has said. This means that the region experienced 94 more fire cases than it did in 2022, representing an increase of 16.5 per cent. However, none of the incidents was fatal unlike in 2022 where two people died in the 570 cases recorded. Senior high schools (SHSs) in the Central Region have started undergoing another round of disinfection exercise. The exercise, which begun on Wednesday in the region, marked phase three of the national disinfection exercise in SHSs in the country.
