The acting Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area in the Central Region, Eric Ato Appiah Mends, known as Nana Beeyin II, has been remanded by the Cape Coast District Court 1 over the alleged murder of 52-year-old Kwesi Mekyeawo. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 25, 2024, during preparations for the Nkusukum Odambea Festival in Nkusukum, Mankessim. Mekyeawo was fatally shot during a ritual procession to slaughter a cow, where tensions reportedly arose between different factions within the traditional area. Central Region Recorded 664 Fire Cases In 2023

The Central Region recorded 664 fire incidents in 2023 as against 570 in 2022, the regional office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has said. This means that the region experienced 94 more fire cases than it did in 2022, representing an increase of 16.5 per cent. However, none of the incidents was fatal unlike in 2022 where two people died in the 570 cases recorded. The approximately 49.9 kilometre Winneba-Mankessim stretch of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway is the deadliest road in the Central Region, the Regional Police Command has said. The police said the quality of the road and the rampant accidents, along the 48-minute drive on the stretch, were mind-boggling due to drivers’ non-adherence to road safety regulations. HIV: 18,127 People In Central Region Living With It

The Central Region had 18,127 persons living with HIV in the region as of December 2021. Out of the number, 12,119, representing 66 per cent, were women, with 4,365 being men. Children aged from zero to 14 with HIV were 1,443. The region also had 863 new infections in the same year, representing 5.1 per cent of the national figure, with 726 being adults and 138 children.
