Ghanaian musician, activist and creative, Deborah Vanessa Owusu-Bonsuis speaking up for the LGBTQIA community and their rights.
The Uncle Obama singer, 38, opened up about her support for the queer community when she appeared as guest on popular urban Ghanaian podcast, SincerelyAccra.
In the episode, Sister Derby is vocal about her allyship for the community and her empathy for their sexual choices.
“I care a lot and I am passionate enough because I have empathy. Secondly, in my industry, most of the people that are making it happen are part of the LGBTQ community. I don’t even like the fact that it is a community. Why is it a community? We are all humans, right? I don’t see why it should even be different,” she said.
According to the singer who is a fashion designer herself, the creative industry both locally and globally has its stakeholders being gay. As such if you were against them then you should stop wearing designer brands.
“The top fashion designers, the make-up artists, the hair stylists. The top fashion designers in the world, let’s say 99% are queer. So, if you are against queer persons, please stop wearing designer brands,” she told the hosts of the show.
Some of the world’s most talented designers including including Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce and Gabanna, Christian Louboutin, Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marc Jacobs have come out as gay and have changed the way people dress in the 21st century.
