President of the Ghana Bar Association(GBA), Madam Efua Ghartey has criticized the Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie over his recent controversial comparison of the performance of State Owned Enterprises(SOE) under the current government to that of the last government.
She gave her remarks at the 2026 Annual GBA Conference which is being held in Ada from September 13th to 18th, 2026.
The GBA president condemned the words of the Chief Justice saying, the role of the Judiciary has been stated explicitly in the constitution. She says where such roles have been dictated, the actors must do well to stay within those dictates.
She called the Chief Justice’s “commendation” of the government an act “left much to be desired.”
“The recent commendation of a public institution and the comparison to a past government’s output by no means a person than the Chief Justice of Ghana, left much to be desired,” she said.
The Association president hinted to a point of view which she said did not want to believe is true. She said, assumptions of the Chief Justice’s allegiance to the government may prove true if the words of 12:34 were to be assessed.
Mathew 12:34 says “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.”
She told the Chief Justice: “The Bar wishes to set a reminder that as much as it is poised to protect the independence of the Judiciary as per article 127 of the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the guarded must stay within their bounds as dictated by their calling in the constitution.”
