The second Lady, H.E Samira Bawumia has also rejected the salaries recommended for her in the Prof. Yaa Ntiamoah-Baidu led committee and decided to refund all allowances paid to her since 2017.
In a brief statement copied to Wontumionline.com and signed by Kwame Twum, Esq, her senior aide, the Second Lady stated that in consultation with her husband, she is willing to refund all allowances paid to her since 2017 and will not accept any monies allocated to her pursuant to the recommendation of the Prof. Yaa Ntiamoah-Baidu led committee, as approved by Parliament on 6th January, 2021.
Prior her move, the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, walked the talk by refunding to the state of Ghana, all monies paid to her as allowances since her husband was sworn-in as President.
Her action follows the backlash that has sparked following a recommendation by the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee which was approved by Parliament to put her and second lady, Samira Bawumia on a monthly remuneration.
Wontumionline.com, has intercepted a statement from the office of the First Lady that states that “…The First Lady has taken note of the ongoing conversation in the nation, following on from these recommendations and their bipartisan approval by Parliament, as mandated by the Constitution as the body which approves the emoluments of the Executive.”
“It is important to state that payment of such allowances existed and was made to previous First Ladies in the course of the 4th Republic, prior to Mrs. Akufo-Addo becoming the First Lady. Mrs. Akufo-Addo did not request to be paid any allowance. She only received that which existed and attached to her status, albeit informally.”
