Paris Saint-Germain have announced that Neymar has suffered ligament damage in his ankle.
The Brazilian forward was substituted just after half-time in Sunday’s dramatic 4-3 win at home to Lille after taking a heavy blow to the foot, needing a stretcher to leave the pitch.
In a statement late on Tuesday night, PSG confirmed that Neymar has suffered damage to his ankle ligaments, though will need to be further assessed before putting a timeframe on his return.
“New examinations taken today confirm a sprained ankle for Neymar Jr with ligament damage. A new point will be made at the beginning of next week,” the statement read.
PSG added that a knee problem picked up by Nuno Mendes is not serious and he will resume training this week.
Neymar’s injury could see him miss out on PSG’s Champions League last 16 second leg with Bayern Munich on March 8.
The French champions were beaten 1-0 in the first leg at Parc des Princes last week and are facing a second-straight elimination at this stage.
Post-match, Kylian Mbappe called on his teammates to ‘eat well and sleep well’ ahead of the return leg in what French media believed was a dig at Neymar and his worrying fitness record.
