President John Dramani Mahama has warned Board Chairpersons of State Institutions who create offices in the state institutions they govern to desist from the act.
The President speaking at the State Interests and Governance(SIGA) Governing Boards and Chief Executive Officer’s(CEO) Conference said Board Chairpersons are not workers and should therefore not treat the institutions they govern as their places of work.
A Board Chair is not a ceremonial position while a Board member cannot claim entitlements in the institution.
“But Board Chairpersons must not take up offices in their institutions and report to work everyday as though they occupy full time executive positions,” the President said.
In assessing the duties of the Board, he called it a body “responsible for the strategic direction, policy, risk oversight, the integrity of the financial reporting and then institutional performance” of state enterprises.
President Mahama also stressed on the role of Chief Executive Officers(CEOs) of the various enterprises where he stated that Executive Authority should not translate into a positions of privilege.
He called it a responsibility that demands that CEOs comply with the policy decisions and strategic directions approved by the Board.
“Executive Authority is not a personal privilege, it is a measurable responsibility to deliver results in accordance with law, government policy and a strategic direction that is approved by the Board,” he said.
