Police Bans ASEPA And Affiliates’ Jan 4 Demonstration
The Ghana Police Service via an Accra High Court has secured a restraining order, prohibiting the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), from embarking on its January 4, 2021, demonstration.
According to a news release from the police, the (10) days order follows an application filed by police authorities after being notified about the planned demonstration by ASEPA.
Background
The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) in its statement of December 29. 2020 announced plans to embark on a civil protest against the Electoral Commission on January 4, 2021, as part of attempts to draw attention to the commission’s silence on the uncertainty surrounding the parliamentary result of Techiman South Constituency almost a month into the elections.
The protest, according to a press release sighted by Eye Ghana, was in partnership with other Allied CSOs, the highlight of which would have been the presentation of a petition to the Commission between the hours of 9:30 and 10:00 am of the same day.
The Police, according to the release, had been notified about the impending exercise and was expected to provide security for the same.
