NPP Primaries: National Council Rejects petition to centralize August 26 special delegates election

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected a petition by the 9 aspirants proposing the party’s August 26 election be centralized.

The nine (9) flagbearer hopefuls excluding Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia argued that a centralized election would be more efficient and transparent.

They insisted that plans to allow only 900 delegates to vote at the regional level do not sit well with them.

However, the National Council at a crunch meeting on Thursday, July 20, 2023, rejected the petition resolving to implement what is in the party’s constitution.

Reacting to the decision on Wontumi Radio/TV, the deputy National Communication Director of the party, George Krobea Asante says the National Council’s decision is a victory for the party. He said many doubted the outcome of the meeting but once again the NPP has proven that they really understand democracy which has indeed resulted to yesterday’s peaceful outcome.

He emphasized that the decisions on dates and venues for presidential primaries are taken by the National Council of the party and not aspirants.

Mr Krobea disclosed that utterances by aspirants in their campaigns that promotes disunity have been forgiven by the National Council. He said a redline to stop utterances has been taken by the council by sanctions and will be published soon.

“The National Council says it has forgiven all utterances by aspirants, yesterday, the General Secretary and the National Council has agreed that the party will sanctions any candidate who’ll go wayward. It has been communicated to all aspirants to inform their followers and we’ll publish it soon to the public”

The Deputy Communication Director added that Ghanaians have confidence in the NPP and cannot afford to sacrifice a weak army for their victory in 2024.

“The Council is very passionate on the decision and I believe our leaders will go by it” he expressed.
