Takoradi is to be provided with an interchange, the first such road project in the Western Region. The sod-cutting for the latest addition to Ghana’s admirable interchange projects  some of which are uniquely different from those found  anywhere in the West African sub-region has been scheduled for next  month.

This was announced by the Vice President, Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, at the government’s Town Mall meeting and virtual results fair in Accra on Tuesday.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the government has already started the construction of four major interchanges in Accra and in Tamale since the NPP under Nana Addo Dankwa  assumed office three years ago.

They are: The Tamale Interchange, the first in the northern part of the country which is 44% complete; a state of the art interchange project at Tema:The  Pokuase Interchange, the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange which is 56% complete and the Nungua interchange.

Dr. Bawumia told the gathering including Ministers of State and top state officials that the construction of interchanges form part of government’s ambitious plan to improve the road sector.

He said, so far the government has initiated 1,927 road projects. Out of these 1,307 have been completed whiles 620 projects are ongoing.

On steel bridges, Dr. Bawumia said, 79 of them  have been constructed with 46 already completed.

He also said, 134 footbridges are being executed.

The Vice President said, the scaling up  of the government’s plan on improving the road infrastructure in the cities has seen 589 kilometers of asphaltic overlay.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the government’s focus in transforming the economy is to improve facilities and systems from low to high productivity level powered by  digitization.

He emphasized that the government’s achievements are  “within its  broader goal of developing infrastructure with all the districts having their fare share.”
