The New Patriotic Party has seized on the Court of Appeal’s acquittal of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu to demand the immediate release of its Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as “Chairman Wontumi”, arguing that the two cases together expose a standard at the heart of the current government’s anti-corruption agenda.
In a statement released by the party, it quizzes on why Madam Sedina against whom a mountain of evidence was gathered and who was duly convicted because acquitted and discharged but Chairman Wontumi is behind bars when his conviction rests on no such evidence?
The party described Wontumi’s conviction and the sentence of twenty years imprisonment with hard labour as politically motivated and was given without sufficient evidence.
“His conviction and the outrageous sentence of twenty (20) years’ imprisonment with hard labour was politically motivated and procured without sufficient evidence,” the statement said.
The party argues that the Attorney-General has, through a series of nolle prosequi entries and case discontinuations since January 2025, effectively shielded every NDC-affiliated person who stood trial for offences against the public purse, while NPP-affiliated individuals continue to face the full force of the law.
“It cannot be the case that the law is a weapon against one side of the political divide and a shield for the other,” the statement declared, calling on the Judicial Council to urgently restore public confidence in a justice system the NPP says today’s ruling has gravely undermined.
