NPP Alleges Political Persecution Over Remand Of Abronye DC Into NIB Custody

The New Patriotic Party has condemned the decision by the Adenta Circuit Court to remand its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, into the custody of the National Investigations Bureau.

In a statement dated May 13, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP described the remand as politically motivated and expressed concern that Mr Baffoe could remain in custody until the final determination of the case.

According to the statement, the party believes the development represents “an attack on every Ghanaian who believes in freedom, justice and the right to speak truth to power.”

The NPP alleged that the actions against Abronye DC form part of a broader  political agenda directed by the Presidency. The party further claimed that its officials and communicators are being harassed and prosecuted because of their political affiliation.

The statement accused the Office of the President of becoming “the headquarters of political persecution in this country.”

The party also alleged that the courts were being weaponised against opposition figures, questioning what it described as the speed with which charges are filed, hearings arranged and remand orders secured against opposition members, while cases involving alleged corruption and abuse of office by government appointees are, according to the party, not pursued with the same urgency.

The NPP maintained that Abronye DC should have been granted bail, describing him as a person with a fixed place of residence, known family ties, no flight risk and no history of violence.

It further argued that the judiciary risks losing public confidence and called on the Judicial Council and the Chief Justice to investigate the conduct of some judges whose rulings, according to the statement, appear to favour the ruling government.not become a political battlefield,” the statement said, warning that silence in the face of what it described as “judicial decay” would amount to complicity.

The party also alleged that the remand of Abronye DC was intended to divert public attention from what it described as the “international embarrassment” surrounding the reported arrest in the United States of Ohene Kwame Frimpong by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the statement, the incident had negatively affected both the integrity of the governing party and Ghana’s international image.

The NPP stated that it stands firmly behind Abronye DC and would use all constitutional, legal and political means available to secure his release and clear his name.

The party also urged its supporters to remain calm, disciplined and united, while cautioning them against being provoked or intimidated.

Copies of the statement were addressed to several institutions, including the Council of State, the National Peace Council, the diplomatic corps in Accra, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, the National House of Chiefs, the Ghana Journalists Association, the Ghana Bar Association, the Trades Union Congress, CDD Ghana, the Institute of Economic Affairs, the Ghana Integrity Initiative, the University Teachers Association of Ghana and the Media Foundation for West Africa.
