The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that MTN Ghana has committed more than US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand the country’s telecommunications network.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on September 7, the Minister said the investment forms part of a broader effort to address persistent network problems in Ghana, extend reliable telecommunications services to underresourced communities, and support the rollout of 5G services nationwide.
Of the total, approximately $380 million has been earmarked for 2026 to improve network coverage, deploy additional cell sites, and support the expansion of Ghana’s 5G infrastructure.
“MTN Ghana has committed more than $1.1 billion over the next three years, including roughly $380 million this year, to expand coverage, deploy new sites and support 5G rollout,” George said.
He added that MTN had acquired 800 new cell sites this year, describing it as the highest annual build the company has undertaken in a decade, with a particular focus on rural and peri-urban communities where network challenges have been most pronounced.
The Minister said he had personally worked with Members of Parliament to identify the specific locations most affected in their constituencies.
“I personally worked with Members of Parliament to mark the specific locations most affected in their constituencies the first time such an exercise has been done at this scale and 180 of those sites are already active and carrying traffic today,” he said.
George said the scale of the investment demonstrates MTN Ghana’s significant commitment to strengthening its network infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for reliable, high-speed connectivity.
