As Regional Minister of Ashanti Region and a key member of the Security Council, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah has revealed that he has access to stats that show that most criminals in the country use ‘okada‘ for their operations.
He therefore advised the media to avoid writing sensational stories when the security agency especially the Police swoop on ‘okada‘ riders.
Issues of legalizing ‘okada’ has been the major campaign message of the National Democratic Congress heading into the 2020 elections.
However on the Wontumi Morning Show, the Minister stated “most of the people who commit crime in the country, use okada. The media should not heckle the Police when they are working and have to stop people riding motor. It doesn’t help us to stop crime“.
Touching on the recent shooting of a Chinese national at Ahodwo, a suburb of Kumasi, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah stated that despite the efforts of the police to reduce crime in Ashanti Region, some criminals are able to get away with it.
As reported by Daily Guide, a police report stated that four strong men, who were in charge of two motorbikes, robbed and shot the Chinese man by the roadside in broad day light.
“Once a while you will have some people getting away with crime. Even in the US 911 happened. People are able to commit crimes there despite their sophisticated security systems“, the Minister quipped.
He continued that there are plans in place which has contributed significantly to the peace being enjoyed in Ashanti region.
“We have plans I cant speak on to the public but it is the reason we are enjoying peace in Kumasi. The military and police are doing their best in the region but they are not making noise about their successful operation which has reduced crime“, he added.
