The National Youth Organiser for the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye has revealed that the woes of embattled Assin North MP is far from over as the party has initiated the process of pressing criminal charges against him.
The NPP national executive popularly known as Nana B stated on Wontumi TV’s Talk Ghana Show shortly after a High Court Judge, Justice Kwasi Boakye, ordered for fresh elections to be conducted at Assin North that a case has been lodge with the Police to slap Mr. James Gyakye Quayson with criminal charges.
“Our Central Regional Secretary, Takyi Mensah has gone to the Police Station to lodge criminal complains. He makes a case that Mr. James Gyakye Quayson has defiled the orders of our Constitution and that constitutes perjury”, Nana B said.
Earlier today, a Cape Coast High Court canceled results of the parliamentary elections in the Assin North constituency for the 2020 elections.
Wontumionline.com has gathered that the court also warned Joe Gyaakye Quayson the NDC 2020 Parliamentary candidate for Assin North MP from holding himself as the MP for the Constituency.
It would be recalled that a parliamentary election petition was filed at the Cape Coast High Court that sought to annul the declaration of Mr. James Gyakye Quayson as the Member of Parliament (MP) elect for the Assin North Constituency.
Michael Ankomah -Nimfa of Assin Bereku, filed the petition and served the Electoral Commission (EC) as the second respondent.
Also in November last year, a group calling itself ‘Concerned Citizens of Assin North’ petitioned the EC in the Central Region to withdraw the candidature of Mr. Quayson as he owes allegiance to Canada.
He was challenged for having dual citizenship contrary to the expressed provision of Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana, which states, “A person shall not be qualified to be a member of Parliament if he – (a) owes allegiance to a country other than Ghana.”
Mr. Quayson, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) MP-elect, polled 17,498 against New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Madam Abena Durowaa Mensah who had 14,793 on December 7, 2020 election.
