Man Utd Meet With Cavani For Showdown Talks Over His Future At The Club
Manchester United’s powerbrokers held talks with Edinson Cavani on Tuesday as they look to convince him to stay.
Newly-appointed director of football John Murtough and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward met with the Uruguay international at noon to discuss whether he wants to extend his contract at United for another season.
Cavani’s future was plunged into doubt earlier this month amid interest from Argentine club Boca Juniors and the player’s father Luis revealing his son did not feel comfortable in England.
It was also reported that Cavani was unhappy over his treatment at the hands of the English FA, who banned him for three games in January and fined him £100,000 for using the word ‘negrito’ in a social media post.
Only last weekend, Uruguay assistant coach Mario Rebollo added to the clamour for Cavani to leave when he said he must move to somewhere he can find better ‘rhythm and competition’.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he wants Cavani to stay but confirmed the final decision rested with the 34-year-old. The United manager is now hoping Tuesday’s talks at their Carrington training base prove productive.
Cavani is aware United’s priority is to sign another forward this summer and he is concerned at the amount of game time he will receive.
However, United will need quality cover as Marcus Rashford could be facing some time out at the start of the new season should he require surgery on his troublesome shoulder.
Cavani, who joined as a free agent last October, has also struggled for fitness at times this season though has still managed seven goals in 26 appearances.
He was in high spirits during training at Carrington on Tuesday after his team, consisting of Nemanja Matic, Alex Telles, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Hannibal Mejbri, proved victorious in the day’s five a side competition.
Cavani is in line to figure against Brighton on Sunday with United waiting on Rashford’s fitness and that of Anthony Martial who picked up a knock to the fibula under his left knee playing for France against Kazakhstan.
