A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Nyamesem, has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama and his administration, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of mismanaging public funds.
Speaking on the Wontumi morning show with the host, Nana Fokuo Dwomo, Mr. Nyamesem alleged that the current administration had withdrawn $2 billion from Ghana’s $14.2 billion international reserves inherited from the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
According to him, the funds were used to stabilize the cedi by reducing the depreciation of the US dollar, a move he described as irresponsible.
”They have taken $2 billion from the $14.2 billion international reserves just to pump into the economy to suppress the depreciation of the dollar. Is this not insane?” he questioned.
”If $2 billion were converted into GH¢50 notes, it would fill approximately 150 forty-foot containers; the amount was enormous and required a full explanation from the government”.
He further claimed that Ghana’s international reserves had now reduced to $12.2 billion, arguing that the government must publicly account for the expenditure.
Mr. Nyamesem also criticized the government’s decision to present an account of the expenditure without engaging the media.
”How can the government account for public funds without involving the media? How are Ghanaians expected to understand what has been spent?”
He accused the NDC administration of lacking transparency and alleged that the government had failed to live up to its promises of accountability.
Mr. Nyamesem further alleged that within just one and a half years in office, the Mahama administration had spent $2 billion from the reserves without providing sufficient justification.
Calling on the government to render a full account of its stewardship, he insisted that the NPP would continue to demand transparency over the management of public resources.
”I believe the NPP would return to power in the 2028 general elections to improve the lives of cocoa farmers, students, traders, and other Ghanaians facing economic difficulties”.
