The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has criticised the government’s low spending across various sectors of the economy particularly health warning that the consequences will be severe and will hurt the nation.
Speaking to the media at Parliament, the MP decried the government’s spending record, saying the failure to invest adequately in critical sectors such as health could have dire consequences for the country.
“The implication of not spending on the health sector is that we cannot have proper healthcare, and when you don’t have healthcare, you don’t have a nation, because it is people who create value,” he said. “You cannot underestimate the quality of your people. The best standard is that you have to have a very healthy population.”
The MP also raised concerns about the country’s HIV/AIDS rate, attributing its rise to reduced government spending on prevention efforts.
“HIV/AIDS cases have increased, and it is largely because access to condoms and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns have suffered due to inadequate government spending,” he said.
He further warned that the nation’s overall health is at risk, pointing to a rise in cancer cases and other diseases.
“Cases have gone up significantly. One out of every two deaths now results from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), meaning more people are dying from conditions such as cancer and diabetes,” he said.
