Kessben University Lecturer Asks Akufo- Addo To Save Local Governance
A Lecturer with the Kessben University College in Kumasi, Nana Kwame Obeng Akatii has asked President Akufo Addo to appoint the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to save local governance and public funds.
Nana Kwame Obeng Akatii who is also the Executive Director of the Bureau of Local Governance (BuLoG) said this at a press conference in Kumasi.
The Lecturer said per the 1992 Constitution, the maximum duration for the acting position is six months, that is a reasonable duration after that it becomes obsolete.
He stated that section 20 of the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936, and the 1992 Constitution, article 243, the MMDCEs shall be appointed by the President, and it may take about 37 days or more (MSODMMA’s, 2019) before the MMDCEs can start work in all the 260 District Assemblies in Ghana.
He further intimated that acting positions according to Stony Brook University (2021), “acting appointments should not last more than six months “.
The Expert details that across Ghana, everything has become standstill in the MMDAs while the electorates are suffering because of delaying of the MMDCEs appointments.
However, he noted that the Assemblies go to the electorates and collect revenues while the electorates are facing huge challenges in their electoral areas.
He said the Assembly members are also engulfed with pressure from their communities.
“If it continues like this, then it means public funds are going “desolate”, he emphasized.
