The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effiduase-Asokore Constituency, Nana Ayew Afriyie has stated that he won’t be surprised if it turns out one of the presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, is solidly behind the false allegation that an Islamic group in Nigeria is funding the campaign of vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a telephone interview on the Wontumi Morning Show, the MP urged the general public to disregard the news and emphasized that “in the heart and mind of Bauwmia, he has no network in Nigeria” funding his campaign.
He pointed out that the allegation shows how desperate some of the aspirants have become because they know they can’t match Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming contest.
“It is sheer desperation from either within the party or outside the party. For all we know a member of the party is behind it and is looking for ways to destroy Bawumia”, he said.
Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie continued that the campaign of the vice President is rather enjoying funding from respected and well known Ghanaians; majority of whom he claims want to stay under the radar after donating massively.
“With Bawumia when he enters a town, the people there are bold to come out and say they want to bear the cost of some of his campaign activities. With time, I will come out and mention names and sometimes they tell us not to make their names public. If not for their plea, I would have mentioned senior citizens in Ashanti region who have supported him out of love”, he said.
David Humdeyin, a journalist in Nigeria is alleging without providing any form of evidenct that the Bawumia Campaign is being funded by some Islamic group in Nigeria called the ACF.
But Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie rubbished the story and challenged David Humdeyin to show proof.
“Why didn’t the person behind the story release this news before but is only doing so when Bawumia decided to partake in the elections?” he reasonably asked.
David Humdeyin forced the legislator to put Nigeria under the microscope and exposed some journalists practicing in the country as people noted for telling “fat lies”.
“In Nigeria there are good and bad people so I will add the person behind the story to the bad nuts so if he writes this story, it doesn’t really worry me. In their country, some journalists do worse things. If you follow Nigeria politics, they do worse things and tell fat lies”, he said.
