Independence Celebration: For How Long Will We Continue To Beat Drums And March In The Sun?- Nana Obiri Boahen Asks

A former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen has shown serious concern about Ghana’s annual Independence celebrations.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen asked that “for how long will we continue to beat drums and match in the sun” to celebrate the occasion?

Speaking on Wontumi TV he said it’s high time government took a second look at the celebration.

He suggested that the celebration can be organized in a low key to symbolize the occasion.

He bemoaned that the ordinary Ghanaian is worried about the economy.

Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen said “Ghana has done more but hasn’t reached the standard yet”

“More roads, universities and hospitals have been built but we need to do more,” he said.

Ghana will today, March 6, 2023, mark its 66th Independence Day at Ho, the Volta Regional capital.

This year’s event is on the theme: “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose”.

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea Bissau, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is the Special Guest of Honour.

Background

On 6th March 1957, Ghana gained independence after 83 years of British colonial rule – becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence from Britain.

The country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana “free forever” from colonial rule, marking a historic turning point in the governance of the country. Since that day, every March 6 is celebrated across the country and among Ghanaians abroad with various activities, some of which are observed throughout March.
