A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),Nana Obiri Boahen, has lashed at parliament for the bold initiative taken to abolish the death penalty in the country’s constitution.
He said abolishing the death penalty has the tendency to increase mob justice.

Speaking in interview on Kumasi-based Wontumi TV/Radio morning show hosted by Nana Abu-Prah on Wednesday, July 26, the lawyer said, “I will support mob attack on this note, why should you imprison someone for life for a murder case and describe his punishment which is death as a human right issue? What happens to the right of the person who was killed, doesn’t he/she also have the same right?” he asked

He said the constitution shouldn’t have mercy on perpetrators of evidence-based crimes such as murder. ” It’s dangerous, it’s a recipe for chaos” He added.

He continued, ” Life in prison doesn’t end crime, some punishments are warnings and some are to serve as deterrent for future occurences. Ghana has lost some amount of discipline now as compared to the early 80’s, the presidents we had from Rawlings to Nana Akufo-Addo never signed for the death penalty to be applied – all in the name of safe guarding our human right credential. It means those killed have animal right”.

He told the host that he, Obiri Boahen will implement the death penalty with bold decision by signing every month for such victims to be killed as well.

“I’ll scrap this law and bring back the killings. You can’t have freedom of movement anymore in this country because victims are having the same right to life. We have created an atmosphere of fear and panic for ourselves because we pardon and pamper murderers on human right grounds, I’m telling you, if I Obiri Boahen became the president you’ll see what would happen in this country. Enough of that ugly noise! Ghanaians are sick and tired of the panic.” The learned lawyer echoed.
