Deputy General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Obiri Boahene has waded into the circumstances leading to the retirement of Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo warning that he would’ve fired him if he had the power to.
Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo, an appointee of the erstwhile Mahama government, was constantly in a brawl with the current President Akufo-Addo’s government during his time as Auditor-General.
He once accused former Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) of paying US$1m to Kroll Associates for no work done.
Unhappy with the development which was primarily targeted at the ruling government to make it look corrupt, Mr Osafo-Maafo and officials from the MoF filed an appeal at the Accra High Court on October 22, 2019 and won the case involving a $1 million surcharge slapped on him by the former Auditor-General, Yaw Domelevo.
Mr. Domelevo was forced into compulsory retirement after it emerged that he was over 60 years of age.
In a letter signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, Executive Secretary to the president on Wednesday, March 3, and addressed to Daniel Yao Domelevo said:
“The attention of the President of the Republic has been drawn to records and documents made available to the Office by the Audit Service, that indicate that your date of birth is 1 June 1960 and that in accordance with article 199(1) of the Constitution, your date of retirement as Auditor General was 1 June 2020.
“Based on this information, the President is of the view that you have formally left office. Mr Johnson Akuamoa-Asiedu will continue to act as Auditor-General until the President appoints a substantive Auditor General.
But Nana Obiri Boahene in reacting the issue on the Wontumi Morning Show which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, stated that he would have shown no mercy and fired Mr. Domelevo rather than use the kind words the Executive Secretary to President Akufo-Addo used.
According to Nana Obiri Boahene he used to believe the former Auditor General was doing a good work for the nation until he started exhibiting behaviours that made his trust for him vanish.
“The controversy surrounding his age shows that he has been lying to the nation. I would have fired him straightforward if I were the Executive Secretary to the President”, the NPP deputy scribe noted.
