Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Mr. Paul Awentami Afoko has promised to ensure Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes President in 2028 when he is elected Chairman of the party.
The former Chairman made the statement after he filed his nomination to contest for the National Chairmanship role at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
“If you elect me National Chairman, I will work loyally and tirelessly with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to return the New Patriotic Party to government in 2028,” he told party members present.
Mr. Afoko said the party’s responsiblity is clear. It is to ensure Dr. Bawumia becomes President in 2028, and he wants to be part of that course. His intentions are clear to create a disciplined and robust party for the flagbearer.
He says structures are important for 2028’s victory, as that will be the only way the flagbearer can clearly communicate his vision to the public.
“We must give our Presidential Candidate a united, disciplined, formidable party capable of carrying our message into every community in Ghana and winning the confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
The National Chairman aspirant assured his role as Chairman will not be ambiguous. He stated simply, “the flagbearer and the Chairman do not compete with one another. Their responsibilities complement one another.”
“The flagbearer leads our national electoral proposition. The Chairman must ensure that behind him stands a functioning political organisation capable of translating that proposition into votes,” he added.
He said the NPP cannot wait until 2028 for it to become an election winning machine, he said, “our journey back to government in 2028 does not begin in December 2028. It begins now. We must build that machine today.”
Mr. Afoko also promised to lead one NPP, not a particular faction stressing on the importance of unity in the party’s 2028 fortunes.
“I will not be Chairman for one faction. I will not be Chairman for one candidate. I will not be Chairman for one region. I will not be Chairman for one generation. I will be Chairman for every member of the New Patriotic Party,” he assured.
“There cannot be an NPP of the powerful and another NPP for the forgotten grassroots member. There is only one New Patriotic Party. And every Patriot must have a place in it,” he added.
