Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has revealed that he played a major financial role in supporting the party’s activities in the Ashanti Region long before he became the party’s regional chairman.
Speaking in an interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement TV, Wontumi said he personally funded many campaign activities and youth programs across the region while serving as a constituency chairman.
According to him, his dedication and financial support to the party at both the regional and national levels contributed significantly to his eventual elevation to the position of Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“As a constituency chairman, I was the one funding most of our campaign activities in the region. There were times I was even raising money for the national party beyond the regional level,” he stated.
Wontumi noted that his appointment as regional chairman was historic because no constituency chairman had previously risen directly to become a regional chairman within the party.
“For the first time, there was no constituency chairman who had become a regional chairman. But the party felt that because I had worked so hard and supported the party at the regional level, there was the need for me to become the next regional chairman,” he said.
He explained that his contributions went beyond campaign activities, adding that he was instrumental in supporting youth-oriented programs throughout the Ashanti Region.
At the time, he said, the current Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, was serving as the party’s regional youth organizer and could attest to the support he provided.
“At the time, Gideon Boako was the youth organizer, and anyone can confirm it from him. Almost all the youth programs in the region, I was the one sponsoring them,” Wontumi disclosed.
The NPP regional chairman maintained that his rise through the party’s ranks was the result of years of sacrifice, commitment, and unwavering support for the party’s activities across the region.
