GUM Congratulates President Akufo-Addo
The presidential candidate of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, has congratulated President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his victory in last Monday’s presidential election.
He prayed for the President and the government and asked that God guide them to continue to implement policies and programmes for the betterment of the people in his second tenure.
Rev. Andrews, however, appealed to President Akufo-Addo to create an avenue for amicable settlement of issues that had cropped up after last Monday’s general election.
“We pray that the country remain peaceful because the world is watching us”, he said, adding that God will help the nation sail through the challenges successfully.
Rev. Andrews gave the congratulatory message when he visited President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday. He was accompanied by some of his party executive.
Rev. Andrews, also known as ‘Osofo Kyere Abosom’ is the Founder and Leader of Life Assembly Worship Centre, a Church organisation. He came third in the Presidential election.
Rev. Andrew appealed to the government to consider sponsoring political parties, particularly the smaller parties, to finance their activities.
Peace and stability
President Akufo-Addo said it was incumbent on political party leaders to ensure the prevailing peace and stability in the country was sustained.
“I will do whatever I can to ensure peace, security and unity in the country, you can count on me. I will do it. The country needs it and I also need that. I am the leader of this country and if anything happens it is my name that will be mentioned,” he said.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “nothing bad should happen during our time as political leaders” adding that “all I need is for people like you to also support me through advice, encouragement and anything that will help me achieve that”.
Regarding the request for state sponsorship of political parties and the media, the President said because the resources to be expensed for such ventures belonged to the nation, the country needed to arrive at a consensus on such a proposal.
Other presidential contestants
Earlier last Wednesday, the presidential candidates of the Ghana Freedom Party, Madam Akua Donkor, and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mr Percival Kofi Akpaloo, called on the President at his Nima residence to congratulate him.
Other candidates, Mr David Apasera of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Ms Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Henry Herbert Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and Mr Hassan Ayariga of the All People Congress’s (APC) have also commended the President, the Electoral Commission (EC) and the electorate for a peaceful and orderly elections.
Rev. Andrews obtained 105,565 votes, being 0.805 per cent of the valid votes cast, with Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) securing 12,215 votes, representing 0.093 per cent, while Madam Akua Donkor had 5,575, representing 0.042 per cent of the votes cast in the presidential polls.
Dr Henry Herbert Lartey of the GCPP recorded 3,574 votes, representing 0.027 per cent; Mr Hassan Ayariga of the APC, 7,140 votes (0.054 per cent); Mr Percival Kofi Akpaloo of the LPG, 7,690 votes (0.059 per cent) and Mr David Asibi Apasera of the PNC, 10,887 votes (0.083 per cent).
The rest are Ms Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku of the PPP, 6,848 votes (0.052 per cent); Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP), 6,612 votes (0.50 per cent) and Mr Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker, the only Independent Candidate in the race, 9,703 votes, being 0.074 per cent of the total valid votes cast.
