Ghana’s next Parliament will record no independent candidate – Dr Smart Sarpong

Senior research fellow at the Kumasi Technical University (KTU) Dr Smart Sarpong has predicted that Ghana’s next Parliament will not have any independent candidates.

His forecast suggests that the two dominant parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will do well in their stronghold on parliamentary seats.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Wontumi TV/Radio, Mr Sarpong noted that the trend may not continue, with independent candidates potentially winning a single sit in the December elections.

“In my estimation, this next parliament will not have an indepentent candidate but the percentage is very high for some candidates in some constituencies”, citing Asante Akyem Central as a though competition between the NPP and the independent candidate.

Dr. Sarpong’s prediction is based on his research, which indicates that the NPP will perform well in several regions, including, Ahafo Region, Ashanti Region, Bono Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, North East Region, Western Region, Western North Region

His predictions highlight the competitiveness of the December polls.
