GFA Set To Extend Carlos Queiroz’s Contract As Black Stars Coach – Report

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to remain in his position beyond the short-term contract he was offered to lead the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to veteran sports journalist Michael Oti Adjei, the Portuguese coach is already in talks with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to finalise a new deal as soon as possible.

He explained that the GFA wants to end the cycle of continuously changing coaches, as it disrupts the team’s philosophy and overall performance due to inconsistency.

Oti Adjei noted that Queiroz’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup impressed GFA officials, and he could be entrusted to lead Ghana’s campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Carlos Queiroz will remain Black Stars coach for at least a few more months, potentially a few more years, and I’ll explain why. Basically, Queiroz was given a four-month contract to coach the Black Stars during the World Cup. His target was to get the team out of the group stage and potentially reach the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal didn’t happen, but victory over Panama and a draw against England got Ghana through to the knockout stage.

“The GFA then had to make a decision. Here is why they decided Queiroz will stay: the Black Stars are seeking to qualify for the Nations Cup in September. They failed to qualify for the last Nations Cup. The thinking of the GFA leadership is that if they change coaches now, a new coach would need time to adapt and implement a new philosophy. Ghana cannot afford to miss another Nations Cup. So Carlos Queiroz will stay as Black Stars coach,” he said in a post on X.

So far, Queiroz has managed five games with the Black Stars, recording one win, two draws, and two defeats, most importantly leading Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
